The main focus of this role is on the Eastern Interconnection in the United States.

Commercial Analysis is responsible to provide commercial inputs to the financial decisions such as investment, acquisition, divestment, PPA execution, commodity trading, etc. to fulfill the growth plan of RWE Renewables, 5 billion Euros investment by 2022. The role comprises identifying, analyzing, and quantifying revenue streams for renewables e.g. ancillary services markets, capacity auctions or portfolio benefits. In addition to that, challenges regarding intermittency and curtailment analysis is of growing importance.

The position requires a high affinity for numerical work, and handling of a large amount of data and can therefore also include coding tasks. Clear customer-centric communication both verbally and via slides is also key. You will be part of a highly dynamic, international, and geographically diverse team which comes along with occasional travel, working remotely, and demonstrating a proactive and autonomous approach to work.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze the short/medium/long-term development in various US power markets, focused on the Eastern Interconnection (MISO, PJM, NYISO, SERC, SPP) based on a thorough understanding of market fundamentals, regulatory development, renewable penetration, storage growth, etc.
  • Analyze and provide forecasts of energy commodity prices (power, ancillary services, capacity, renewable energy certificates, natural gas, etc.), either using internal models or by engaging with external consultants. Experience in statistical / time series analysis or fundamental energy market modeling is helpful.
  • Steer the commercial strategy and support final investment decisions (FIDs) for renewable energy assets. Prepare decision proposals and manage internal decision meetings for FIDs and commercial strategies.
  • Evaluate and price Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) & hedge structures. The requires understanding scheduling & settlement requirements and quantifying key commercial risks linked to renewable penetration, regulatory development, etc.
  • Model revenues and evaluate investment opportunities in battery storage and power-to-hydrogen assets. The inherent flexibility makes previous exposure to linear optimization modeling helpful, but it is not required.

Work experience requirements

  • Knowledge of US power markets and experience with the economics of renewable energy sources.
  • Excellent understanding of power market fundamentals and commodity market and price risks. Experience in production cost modeling (e.g., PLEXOS, PROMOD, Aurora) is helpful.
  • Excellent quantitative skills, paying attentions to detail but not losing sight of key messages, as well as the ability to distill key messages from complex datasets
  • Strong communication skills with all stakeholders including senior management, and the ability to work in a diverse, international team
  • Strong Excel skills, i.e., should be able to use functionalities at an expert level. This includes working with macros and VBA functions. Programming skills (e.g., Python) are also advantageous
  • Minimum of three years of industrial or research experience in power and commodity markets

Education requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an analytical/numerical subject, preferably Economics, Engineering, or Mathematics
  • A graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) is considered advantageous for this role
