Job Description

Lead ISO New England’s (ISO-NE’s) environmental activities and perform planning and market simulations to support the Special Studies and Interregional Planning team, within the greater System Planning team. With the shift to a cleaner grid, the demand and generation mix of the New England power system are expected to experience major transformations over the next decades. The Special Studies and Interregional Planning team sits at the heart of these transformations and is in need of a passionate and innovative individual to help meet the exciting challenges that a shift to a cleaner grid will create.

Responsibilities include recognizing ISO-NE’s environmental business and operational needs and independently conduct or coordinate studies, analyze results, and develop recommendations to support ISO-NE’s activities. With a shift to a cleaner grid, understanding and reflecting environmental concerns in the study of the bulk power system will be of ever-growing importance.

How you will make an impact

  • Lead ISO-NE’s environmental planning activities. Identify and evaluate implications of federal and state environmental regulations, policies, and initiatives on the operation and planning of the bulk power system.
  • Provide technical support to ISO-NE staff and work with external stakeholders on environmental issues, including but not limited to, greenhouse gas reductions, air quality, and water quality.
  • Chair the ISO-NE’s Environmental Advisory Group.
  • Lead the development of ISO-NE’s annual Electric Generator Air Emissions report.
  • Design, develop, and manage environmental data sets, files, or databases needed for communication purpose and as inputs to operational, market, and planning simulations.
  • Perform simulations of the operation of the bulk power system using planning and market simulation software tools including but not limited to Energy Exemplar PLEXOS and PowerGEM TARA/PROBE.
  • Work with ISO-NE staff or consultants to conduct various analyses and subsequently prepare written reports detailing the objectives, assumptions, methods, findings, and recommendations.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other ISO-NE departments, market participants, NEPOOL and ISO-NE committees, regulatory entities, and other stakeholders.
  • Respond to data and information requests from regional/national reliability organizations and state and federal regulators.

What we are looking for

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Economics, or Environmental Policy/Science is required; concentration related to power systems is preferred. A Master’s degree in similar disciplines is desirable.
  • Strong familiarity and/or interest with environmental regulations and their impact on the operation and planning of the power system is required; knowledge of the New England environmental landscape is a plus.
  • Computer programing skills (such as Python) to automate simulations and streamline data pre- and post-processing is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and with a wide range of engineers/economists/analysts and other stakeholders to assure that projects meet schedules and goals.
  • Ability to conduct multiple projects simultaneously, with a strong attention to details.
  • Ability to organize and present information in structured and concise manner, while meeting predefined corporate goals.
  • Outstanding oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
